| The birth of a poet Can you recall an important incident from long ago that was really important to you? I remember the exact time when I decided I wanted to be a poet. I was eight years old, at my school recital, standing on the stage reciting my favorite poem. My younger brother, Phil, sat next to my mother and they were in the audience looking up at me from below. I was not shy and looked the judges straight in the eye. I took a deep breath and announced the title: The Elephant Then I launched into the poem. The rhythm and the words about his strength and gentleness with children delighted not only me, but everyone present! I can still recall that I did my absolute best to make the elephant real for everyone listening that day. It was at that moment that I decided I wanted to become a poet. I raised five kids, had a career and now that I am a senior, I am finally living my dream. ~~~
